In 2018, 8.5 percent of the U.S. population, or 27.5 million people, did not have health insurance at any point during the year. Another 35% percent of people, at least 100 million, are under-insured.

In one survey, 44% of the underinsured and uninsured population did not purchase at least one medically necessary prescription because of cost.

On an average, Americans fill 18 prescriptions per person per year. All of these statistics show that at least 1.3 million prescriptions are filled daily for people with no insurance or for people with high deductibles. This translates to 40 million prescriptions per month that are filled for uninsured and underinsured patients. GoodRx, a prescription drug card distributor, claims that it fills 8 million prescriptions per month.
